The Chairman of the Fiji Shipping Corporation has refuted reports that Government has cancelled its shipping franchise scheme.
Captain Victor Fatiaki while responding to a report in one of the dailies said they have not stopped the franchise scheme because it would mean those living in outer islands would not have shipping services during the festive season, which is usually the busy period as it coincides with the school holidays.
Fatiaki said while they are still dealing with the issue of shortage of vessels, they are monitoring the situation to ensure these islands are serviced.
Some of the islands that continuously encounter irregular shipping service include Lau, Gau, Lomaiviti, Rotuma as well as some parts of Kadavu.
