Government hopes to extend e-ticketing to other modes of transportation.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Economy and Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum who says once it starts running well with the buses then they will extend it to minibuses, taxis and maritime travels on boats.
Sayed Khaiyum says this will help capture revenue and help government plan nationally as to how and what form of transportation people actually use to be able and to provide the right incentive for them.
He says by law all bus companies have to register for e-ticketing by 1st of October and if they don’t then there will be a penalty.
Sayed Khaiyum says that there is also a regulation that allows the passengers to get on the bus for free if the e-ticketing machines are not working so that the travelling passenger does not lose out just because there is a technology problem.
The Minister says bus companies can actually charge anything that is less then the regulated fare but not anything more.
About 1000 post terminals will be placed to cover all the key locations where people can top up their cards.
