Stephen Donald's hopes of joining Ulster on a short‑term deal have been dashed.
The All Blacks' 2011 World Cup hero has failed a medical examination.
The 34‑year‑old first‑five was injured playing for Tokyo‑based Toshiba Brave Lupus in the final game of the Japanese season, leaving Ulster in "a very difficult" position to find a replacement for Christian Lealiifano who has returned to Australia to play for the Brumbies.
The club said in a statement that unfortunately, Ulster Rugby is not in a position to proceed with the signing of Stephen Donald after receiving a medical report on the player on Sunday.
Donald, recorded his 100th appearance for the Chiefs in Super Rugby last year but the veteran hasn't been retained by new coach Colin Cooper.
