High Court Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe has sentenced a 34‑year‑old man to 13 years 7 months imprisonment for raping and sexually assaulting his sister.
The security officer raped and sexually assaulted his 4‑year‑old sister on 10th September last year in Samabula.
While delivering his sentence, Justice Rajasinghe said the sentence is founded on the principle of deterrence.
He said the crime has caused physical and psychological problems for the victim. Justice Rajasinghe added that the crime prevented the natural growth of the girl.
He also noted the significant age difference between the man and the victim as well as the serious breach of trust.
Rajasinghe adds that this was sexual exploitation as children at that age are very vulnerable.
The man has been given a non-parole period of 11 years 7 months.
All three assessors had also found the 34‑year‑old man guilty of rape and sexual assault.
