A woman who pleaded guilty to a count of arson has been sentenced to three years imprisonment which has been partially suspended by Suva High Court Judge Justice Vinsent Perera.

Mary McDonald agreed that she was drinking beer and rum on the 17th of March 2016 and then went to the complainant’s house because she was angry at the complainant for gossiping about her having an affair.

She then made sure all the members of the house were out of the house before she set the house on fire in Lami.

Justice Perera stated that the total damages to the complainant was $40,600 which McDonald is making arrangements to pay back.

He also highlighted that at the time of the offence McDonald was suffering from mild depression.

McDonald has to serve three months of her sentence in prison and the remaining two years and six months has been suspended for two years.
