The issue of flooding has existed for a long time at the Batanikama, Namoli flats due to many factors such as cultivated farm erosion, soil erosion, and logging that have elevated the creek bed level over the years and also due to the nature of the drainage systems that discharge at a very slow rate to Qawa River.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Waterways, Mahendra Reddy during the commissioning of the flood mitigation program in Batinikama this morning.

Reddy says the total cost of this project is $28,500 and the duration of the project is 30 days.

He adds that the Batanikama, Namoli Flood Mitigation program is the Ministry’s first priority.

Reddy says some works that have been proposed for the mitigation works are the cleaning and disposal of debris and dead tree trunks which has disturbed the free flow of Qawa River since Tropical Cyclone Winston.
