The survival of any country or its industries in the future is dependent on innovation and becoming smarter in the way we do things.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya while launching the Smart City Challenge whereby students are engage in a collaborative manner to provide smart solutions using technology, such as computer programming, analytics and visualisation to contribute to a smarter Fijian economy.

Koya says that the Smart City Programme will ensure that towns and cities adapt to global modern management practices, better urban management and where the fresh foods markets will be restructured and redeveloped, where needed.

There are 6 teams each in the competition, representing the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji National University.

The winning groups will be given pre-approval certificates for the Young Entrepreneurship Scheme or YES which provides grant funding for innovative, unique and commercially viable projects for young people.
