21-year-old Isoa Rainima who was found guilty of raping a 23 year old woman in broad daylight in Holland Street in Suva in 2016 has been sentenced to 23 years imprisonment.
He was convicted of 7 counts of rape, 1 count of sexual assault, 1 count of criminal intimidation, 1 count of robbery and 1 count of assault with intent to rape.
While sentencing Rainima, High Court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo says Rainima had pre-planned the offences as he knew Holland Street well and knew that the general public do not go there often.
Justice Temo says that Rainima knew if the victim raised alarm it will be hard for her to be heard.
Justice Temo adds that Rainima was like a predator waiting to pounce on innocent women who used Holland Street and he was cunning and deceitful.
He says that what Rainima put the victim through is the worst he has seen in his 24 years of being on the bench.
He told Rainima not to complain about the long prison sentence he was about to give him.
Justice Temo says that the victim also fainted in the court room while she was giving evidence.
Justice Temo has set a non parole period of 20 years.
