The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission will conduct trader inspection throughout the upcoming festive season as they say over the years it has been a norm for a handful of traders to entice consumers and sell off expired, substandard quality goods, insect infested goods and goods not fit for purpose under the pretext of lucrative deals and specials.
The Commission in a statement has said that this inspection will be done to ensure that consumers get value for their money.
It says with Christmas and New Year sales and promotions being advertised, it is imperative to engage in inspections and check for compliance under the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission Act 2010.
A team from the Commission will be on the ground conducting inspections to ensure products being sold to consumers are fit for purpose, of good quality and more importantly sold to consumers at the marked prices.
The Commission says that it will not hesitate to take action against traders who have been found to be repeat offenders and they have also highlighted that during the Diwali sales, they had noted a number of discrepancies by some traders and had either warned them, issued them with infringement notices with a few being investigated.
The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission says that during such events and festive period, consumers often tend to be swayed by the ‘specials’ and fail to exercise their responsibility of inspecting the items for expiry dates, quality and texture before finalizing their purchase.
They have also urged consumers to report any such cases to the commission should they witness it.
