A 21-year-old man has been jailed by the Lautoka High Court for 14 years, 11 months and 15 days for raping a 16-year-old girl in 2015.

On 5th June 2015, the man raped the student in the hall of a village in Ra and then fled the scene.

They were from the same village.

The matter was later reported to Police by the School Chaplain.

In his sentence, High Court Judge Justice Sunil Sharma said children are entitled to live their lives free from any form of physical or emotional abuse.

Justice Sharma said it is the duty of the court to protect children from sexual abuse or exploitation of any kind.

He said according to the victim impact statement the girl was emotionally and psychologically affected.

The Judge said the victim had post traumatic disorder including flashbacks and did not want to go to school.

A non-parole period of 13 years has been set.
