The Fiji National University Council has been told by the Education Minister Rosy Akbar that the government wants the university to produce relevant graduates who can think critically, have an entrepreneurial mind and be responsible members of society.
She made the comments at the first meeting of the newly appointed FNU Council which ended yesterday.
Akbar says the future of the country is dependent on the national university to produce well‑balanced individuals.
She says of its $164m revenue in 2018, $60m was the operating grant given by the government and $74m was student tuition fee and hostel income.
Akbar said given that tuition and hostel income is almost exclusively from TELS, that $74m is almost all publicly‑funded in the first instance.
FNU Chancellor and Chair of Council, Doctor Rajesh Chandra says they will ensure that University was aligned to the needs of the industry and other stakeholders.
Vice‑Chancellor Professor Nigel Healey says the issues raised by the Education Minister are very well taken and they are now at a point where in the next ten years, they are ready to move onto a new level.
