A man who brutally assaulted his wife in April this year has been jailed for 6 months by the Nausori Magistrates Court.
The incident happened in a village in Tailevu.
The man hit the wife with a hose pipe, punched her ribs, back and shoulder and also kicked her when she tried to run away.
It was heard in court that the man was given a suspended sentence starting from 2012.
In his sentence Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne said suspended sentences are not working for the man and he is not prepared to rehabilitate.
Magistrate Somaratne a deterrence sentence is warranted to denounce the man’s behaviour and deter him from committing crimes in the future.
The court has also issued a permanent restraining order for the safety of the victim.
