A man has been jailed for 18 years, 4 months and 15 days for raping his niece in July, 2016 in Sigatoka.

He has been convicted for one count of rape and two counts of indecent assault.

The man raped the victim who was 7-years-old at the time when her mother had gone fishing.

In his sentence, High Court Judge Justice Sunil Sharma said the man took advantage of the fact that the victim was alone.

Justice Sharma also said the man exposed the girl to sexual activity when she should be playing with her friends and enjoying her life.

The Judge said the man robbed the victim of her innocence and exposed her to an unexpected and uncalled experience.

Justice Sharma also considered the age difference between the two which was 19 years.

A non parole period of 16 years has been set.
