England’s Cricket World Cup hopes hang in the balance after a demoralising defeat by defending champions Australia by 64 runs this morning.
England now needs to beat both India and New Zealand, both of who have been unbeaten in the tournament so far, to ensure semifinal place.
The hosts began the tournament as favourites, but now have little margin for error, with this loss following Friday’s shock defeat by Sri Lanka to make a total of three defeats in six games.
Australia will now play New Zealand at 12.30am this Sunday while England will play India at 9.30pm this Sunday.
Meanwhile, New Zealand will play Pakistan at 9.30 tonight.
The group stage format is a round robin, where all ten teams play each other once, in a single group.
This means a total of 45 matches will be played, with each team playing a total of nine matches.
The top four teams from the group will progress to the semifinals.
Australia currently lead the points table,New Zealand are in second place, India in are third place while England come in fourth.
The first semifinal will be played on the 9th of next month at 9.30pm while the second semifinal will be played on the 10th of next month at 9.30pm.
The final will be played on the 14th of next month.
