The Japanese government is making preparations to support Nadi River Flood control structures and the details will be released soon.

This was discussed during a meeting in Suva between Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Taro Kono and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Inia Seruiratu.

This is the first time in 32 years a Japanese Foreign Minister has visited Fiji and the first visit was in 1987.

Kono also conveyed in the meeting that a training squadron of the Japan’s Maritime Self-Defence Force will make a port call in the Port of Suva in mid August and carry out exchange programs.

He also highlighted that Japan will promote people-to-people exchange among the young generation where the Japanese government will invite 100 children from the Pacific Islands to take part in next years Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and the cost will be paid by the Japanese Government.

Both Ministers agreed on Japan’s dispatch of a mission for promoting tourism, trade and investment.

Based on the proposal from Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, the Ministers confirmed that the Pacific Island Leaders Meeting Ministerial Interim Meeting will be held in Fiji in mid-2020.
