The 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women campaign organised by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre starts today.
This year marches have been organised in Suva, Taveuni, Nadi, Ba and Rakiraki.
The march in Suva will start from the Flea Market at 9.30am this morning, in Ba it will start at 10am from Tabua Park, in Rakiraki the march will start from Lot 2 Yaratale Rd at 10am, the march in Nadi will start at 10am from FNU Namaka Bus Bay and in Taveuni from the Naqara Bakery Shop at 10am.
Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator, Shamima Ali says seven women have lost their lives to domestic violence and have been brutally murdered this year.
She says two children have also lost their lives in the line of domestic violence.
Ali says in Fiji almost 2 in 3 women in an intimate relationship have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
She says girls and women are raped and sexually abused on a daily basis and the march is important for the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre as this is when they intensify the campaign on ending all forms of violence against women, girls and children.
She says a lot of interest has been shown from young men and they are looking forward to their inclusion.
