Fiji Airways National Men’s 7s Coach, Gareth Baber and his management team made up of Tomasi Cama Senior have their work cut out to improve the discipline on the field for the team and to also focus on clean hard hitting defence.
Many people are really concerned about the number of yellow cards in the last two tournaments.
Baber has continued to focus on discipline and defence however these issues remain troubling for now.
We have sent questions to Baber on Fiji’s performance and are awaiting a response.
Fiji Rugby Union CEO, John O’Connor also confirms that Tomasi Cama Senior is also part of the 7s team management until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Meanwhile the Fiji team was reduced to five men in two crunch matches of the Cape Town 7s and these were matches against quality sides like New Zealand and USA.
We also received two yellow cards against Japan.
Fiji received six yellow cards in South Africa and Fiji 7s players were also sin binned six times in the Dubai 7s last week.
Captain, Paula Dranisinukula and Meli Derenalagi were shown yellow cards against New Zealand leaving Fiji to play with five men for almost two minutes of the first half.
Dranisinukula and Vilimoni Botitu were yellow carded against USA where Fiji was played almost two minutes with five players.
The offences range from high tackles, shoulder charge, deliberate knock-ons and challenging players in mid-air.
The Hamilton 7s which will be played on the 25th and 26th of next month.
Fiji is in 6th place with 23 points in the HSBC World 7s Series standings.
New Zealand and South Africa top the HSBC World 7s Series standings with 41 points each.
