Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Environment and Waterways, Dr Mahendra Reddy has revealed that the Ministry will start the construction of 48 new farms roads in Fiji from next month.
Dr Reddy made this announcement in Waisasa settlement, Nausori adding that in addition 36 farm roads will be upgraded.
He says this may seem small in number but is equivalent to a total of 114km of farm access road across Fiji.
The Minister says the connection of farmers to the market is paramount and critical and farmers cannot be expected to undertake large scale farming without connecting them to the market via farm roads.
He adds the Ministry is pooling its own resources of machinery and people to undertake this extensive programme of works and the effective utilization of these internal resources will see them completing the farm roads at an average cost of about $2,600 per kilometer.
