A Chinese national residing in Fiji is bringing to light her alleged unlawful eviction from her home in Laucala Beach after the landlord was allegedly advised by her husband to change the locks.
Her lawyer, Emosi Radrodro says for over a month, the woman has been continuing to fight for her dignity, human rights, and justice.
Radrodro says this illegal act has deprived his client of her passport, essential personal belongings, and even her beloved pet, which remains confined on the property.
He says legal proceedings are now underway, including gathering of relevant documents for the filing of a constitutional redress case to address violations of the woman’s fundamental rights by the end of the week.
Radrodro says her plight has also resulted in her missing a scheduled international flight, further today, compounding the emotional and financial toll of this blatant abuse of power.
He is asking the authorities to enforce Fiji’s tenancy and human rights laws to hold the landlord accountable as his client’s case is not just about her personal struggle but reflects broader systemic issues that must be addressed to protect vulnerable tenants.
Radrodro says the woman has resided in Fiji for some time and lived in the Laucala Beach property for up to six months after receiving the keys from a real estate agent.
He says following her eviction, she has received support from kind local Fijians, including an iTaukei couple who has offered her temporary shelter.
He adds they will also be pursuing criminal charges under the Crimes Act and the FCCC Act for illegal eviction and related offences.
Radrodro says they will be seeking an injunction to regain access to her home and belongings immediately.
The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission is looking into the matter.
