The Women’s Expo that was held in Labasa this week gave the opportunity for a lot of people in the Northern Division to witness and enjoy beautifully handcrafted creations by women in the North.

Not only for people to see these handcrafts, but also for some women to showcase their handicrafts talents.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Varanisese Yauyanu from Vorovoro Island in Macuata says the event gave her the opportunity to market her business and showcase her talents, as well as sell the produce that she created.

She says she started her business in 2009, making virgin coconut oil, scented oils, and soap.

Yauyanu says she faced difficulty scrapping coconuts, as she is unable to use machines due to the lack of electricity on the island.

She adds that it was also difficult to sell her products, as there were no established markets.

Yauyanu says participating in this year’s Women’s Expo was a great opportunity to expose her talent and she was grateful for it.

Yauyanu went on to say that with the recent rise in youth involvement in drug-related activities, there are other ways to earn an income using available resources.

She is urging young people to do something productive for themselves instead of engaging in illegal activities.
