A massive search is continuing in remote Victorian bushland for a man who allegedly shot and killed two police officers at his property in the state's north-east yesterday morning and is believed to be heavily armed.

A 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable were killed during a shootout at a property in the town of Porepunkah, about 300 kilometres from Melbourne.

A detective was also seriously injured after being shot in the lower body, and yesterday underwent surgery.

Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police said the suspected gunman, 56-year-old Porepunkah man Dezi Freeman, is heavily armed and dangerous.
