Poor rubbish disposal practices continue to be a major cause of blocked drains, resulting in surface flooding on many roads during periods of heavy rain.
The Fiji Roads Authority says that despite continuous efforts by their teams to clean and clear drains through high-pressure jetting and other maintenance works, the problem persists.
They say that during the recent heavy rains, several cases of road surface flooding were recorded, and inspection teams found that household rubbish clogging cross culverts and catch pits was the main contributing factor.
The FRA says their teams retrieved large amounts of waste, including plastic bottles, takeaway containers, food wrappers, and general plastic items.
They add that this ongoing issue not only blocks drainage systems but also accelerates the deterioration of road pavements, leading to further damage and costly repairs.
The Authority is urging the public to be more considerate by disposing of rubbish properly, adopting responsible waste-management habits, and avoiding illegal dumping.
They says that clear drains are essential for preventing flooding, protecting road infrastructure, and ensuring public safety during the rainy season.
They are also reminding drivers to proceed with caution, obey all traffic signs and management measures, and adhere to designated speed limits at all times when roads are affected by surface flooding.
The FRA adds that working together remains key to maintaining clean and functional roads and drainage systems across Fiji.
