A study done on the elderly in Fiji shows that many have a view that today’s young people have less responsibilities, relying on their parents for essential daily roles.
The survey done by the Fiji Council of Social Services and Help Age, reports the elderly people saying that there has been a decrease in physical labor among younger people, an increase in smoking and consumption of alcohol, drugs and kava.
They believe that even though services such as school bus fare and educational assistance and establishment of volunteer groups have improved for the younger people, their lifestyles have not improved when compared to many of their elders.
The study was carried out in Sigatoka, Lautoka, Tavua and Suva.
