The language course of mandarin the first of its type for Fiji and in the South Pacific can now be undertaken at the University of the South Pacific.
Confucius Institute of USP Foreign Director Joan Yee said they were surprised by the overwhelming response to people wanting to take up the course where they now have 68 participants from the 20 they wanted.
She added they even had to turn applications down due to the great interest.
The first mandarin class was held yesterday.
