A stepfather has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment by the Suva High Court after he pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault and was convicted for four counts of rape.

The 48-year-old man started committing this offence on an outer island in 2004 when the girl was about 11 years old.

While sentencing him, High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo said it was a breach of parental trust as he was the victim’s stepfather.

Justice Temo said the courts have repeatedly said that children are the future of this country and those who abuse them must expect a severe sentence from the courts to register the society’s disapproval.
