Subramani Goundar who is charged with a count each of manslaughter, failure to supply breath analysis to an officer and failure to comply with requirements following an accident, took the stand in the Suva High Court today.
It is alleged that Goundar drove a taxi in such a manner that caused the death of 35-year-old Sairusi Vunakece.
Goundar told the court that while he was driving on 29th April 2016 at Vuci Road, Nausori, the headlights of his car automatically turned off due to a pot hole.
He further stated while he was driving he felt that something hit the right side of the windscreen.
Defence counsel Tirath Sharma then questioned him on what had happened after that.
He said that he slowed down and looked at both sides but couldn't see anything.
Goundar said 30 metres before reaching his driveway the headlights automatically turned on and that is when he saw a crack on the windscreen.
He said while he was still on his driveway, a vehicle came and parked behind his car and a police officer approached him.
Goundar told the court that the Police officer asked him if he was drunk and he said that he wasn’t.
He further stated that Police took him to the Nausori Police Station and took the breathalyzer test three times after which the police officer told him that he was involved in an accident and locked him up. The case will continue at 2.30pm.
