The Ministry of Public Enterprises is now working with partners to develop a monitoring system for state owned enterprises which also have a commercial arm.

This was revealed in the Public Accounts Committee meeting today.

Opposition MP Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu had asked how the Ministry monitors state owned enterprises like the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation which also has a commercial arm.

Permanent Secretary for Public Enterprises Jitendra Singh says there is a need for them to think along the lines of demarcating the commercial and non commercial obligations of some of state owned enterprises.

While appearing before the Public Accounts Committee, Singh noted that the Ministry of Public Enterprises needs to strengthen its role in monitoring non commercial obligations.

He says there are a number of state owned enterprises that have non commercial obligations and this is currently funded by the government.

Singh says they will be meeting with the aligned ministries to agree on key non commercial obligations by the state owned enterprises and then incorporate them as part of the monitoring.

He adds it is expected that the delivery of these key performance indicators on non commercial obligations will also be linked to the release of the funds to these state owned enterprises.

He says with commercial obligations, they would definitely expect state owned enterprises to make positive returns.
