The use and importation of the 1800 Megahertz and 1900 Megahertz Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephones is now prohibited in Fiji.
The Telecommunications Authority of Fiji has issued a notice to all the people who are still using the Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephones to return it to their office or call them before the 27th of March.
Acting Manager Technical Tevita Navila says as of now when people return the phones there will be no replacements however Telecommunications Authority of Fiji are having discussions with stakeholders to get a replacement for the telephones that are being returned.
This is because Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephones are causing interference to 3G connections and the mobile phone towers.
Navila says if Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephones are being used within the 30-meter radius of a mobile phone tower it blocks all 3G communication lines.
He says the connection tower cannot send or receive any information whether it be voice or data.
Navila adds a fine of up to $20,000 or an imprisonment term of up to 24 months will be imposed to those who continue to use or import the 1800 Megahertz and 1900 Megahertz Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephones after 27th March this year.
