The Judicial Department has confirmed that there is a backlog for maintenance trust fund reconciliation from 1994 and over $1 million has not been claimed.

Chief Registrar Yohan Liyange says they have taken action to recruit more staff because the current seven staff are engaged with other daily routine work in the Accounts Department.

He says they will recruit seven more staff and their task will be to work at night to finish the reconciliation work.

While making a presentation before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts, Liyange says these are unclaimed monies where people had paid into the maintenance account but nobody claimed it.

The Deputy Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Mohammed Dean then asked Liyange whether they can advertise the names of the receivers in the newspapers for unclaimed monies.

Liyange says they have to first carry out the reconciliation process for unclaimed monies.
