The increasing number of students in many schools around the country that do not properly comprehend the English language has been raised with the Minister for Economy and Education Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at the 2018-2019 National Budget Consultations at USP Laucala Campus.

This issue was raised by a USP student who said that her mother is a teacher and she is helping students in Year 8 to learn how to read.

The student suggested that the government set up English Learning Centres.

Sayed-Khaiyum told the student that her suggestion was very urban  centric but it is true that the level of English in schools is deteriorating.

He said they are planning to use Walesi to introduce programs that will help people learn how to properly write and read the English language.

Another student told Sayed-Khaiyum that he is concerned about the number of hybrid vehicles on our roads.

Sayed-Khaiyum said we must not deprive people the right of owning a vehicle as the issue is not about hybrid vehicles but traffic.

The 2018-2019 National Budget Consultations will be held at Suva Grammar School this afternoon.
