A 40-year-old man convicted of four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault has been sentenced to 13 years and seven months imprisonment by Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.

The man who is the step‑father of the 13-year-old victim raped her between 17th March and 13th April last year in Qarani Village in Gau.

Justice Rajasinghe stated that children are the most vulnerable victims of sexual assault in this country.

He adds that the man found an opportunity when the girl was alone and threatened to do something to her if she told anyone.

Justice Rajasinghe says the man denied the victim the natural growth in life.

A non‑parole period of 11 years and seven months has been set.
