People need to prepare for strong to damaging winds in Viti Levu and other smaller islands from later today and people living in all areas in Fiji need to prepare now for strong winds, heavy rain and flooding.

There is also a flood alert now for all major rivers in Fiji.

A tropical cyclone warning is now in place for the western half of Viti Levu from Rakiraki through Nadi to Serua including the interior of Viti Levu, Yasawa and Mamanuca, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

The Nadi Weather Office says a tropical cyclone alert remains in force for the rest of Viti Levu, Lomaiviti and Southern Lau Group.

Strong wind warnings are also in force for the rest of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti Group.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the whole of Fiji.

A flood alert remains in force for the low lying areas, small streams and areas adjacent to all major rivers of Fiji and for low lying areas, small streams and areas adjacent to downstream of Nakauvadra from Vatukacevaceva to Rakiraki Town, Tuva River downstream from Tuva and the low lying areas, Ba River downstream  from Toge to Ba Town, Nasivi River from Nasivi downstream to Tavua Town, Nadi River from Votualevu and Namulomulo downstream to Nadi Town and allied villages.

The centre of Tropical Cyclone Keni is located about 730 kilometres West of Nadi.

Cyclone Keni is currently moving East South East towards the Fiji group.

Close to its centre, the cyclone has damaging winds of up to 100 kilometres per hour.

The Weather Office says Cyclone Keni is expected to intensify further as it moves towards Fiji.

According to forecasters, Category 1 Cyclone Keni is projected to strengthen to a Category 2 cyclone by this evening. 

Please note that damaging winds may begin several hours before the cyclone centre passes overhead or nearby.

On the projected track of Cyclone Keni, the centre of the cyclone is expected to be located about 480 kilometres West North West of Nadi at 9 tonight. 

Expect winds to intensify from tonight into tomorrow.

Sea and river flooding is also expected.

Sea flooding of coastal areas is likely.

Expect very high seas as well.

Meanwhile, there are 2,060 people in 43 evacuation centres in the Western and Northern Division.

This has been confirmed by Director National Disaster Management Office Anare Leweniqila.

In the Western Division there are 832 people in 12 Evacuation Centres in Lautoka, 326 people are in 8 Evacuation Centres in Ba, 532 people are in 5 Evacuation Centres in Tavua, 70 people in 7 Centres in Rakiraki, 8 people in an Evacuation Centre in Nadroga while there are 25 people in another Evacuation Centre in Nadi.

Leweniqila has also confirmed that 267 people are in 9 Evacuation Centres in Labasa.

People who need assistance are urged to call the Southern Division Command Centre on 9905529, the Northern Command Centre on 9905722, the Western Division Command Centre on 9905457 and the Eastern Division Command Centre on 9905563.

 

Roads:

Queens and Kings Roads are reduced to single lane in certain areas due to landslides and rock fall.

Fiji Roads Authority confirms Queens Road is reduced to a single lane in Batiri, Sigatoka due to a landslip while Kings Road is reduced to a single in Naqia, Tailevu due to some rock fall.

All roads in Central and Eastern Divisions are open.

Some roads and crossings are still closed in the Western Division due to flooding.

Situation Reports:

Ba:

Shop owners in Ba Town are securing their stock as it continues to rain.

Special Administrator Dip Narayan says they may close the municipal market at 2pm if it continues to rain.

He says the chances of flood waters affecting Ba Town is high and businesses are taking proactive measures.

Ba has been the worst hit during the bad weather in recent weeks and the businesses have suffered a lot due to the flooding two weeks ago and again last weekend.

This was highlighted by the President of the Ba Chamber of Commerce Dinesh Patel.

Patel says the businesses have not really opened and done business over the last couple of weeks because of the consistent bad weather.

He has stated that they are preparing for the bad weather ahead.

 

Lautoka:

We have received reports of flooding from some parts of Lautoka.

The bridge near Natabua Old People’s Home is flooded.

The area near Lovu Hart Home is flooded.

Buabua, Lovu Sea-Side, Drasa Flat, Saru River and Naikabula areas are also flooded.

 

In Rakiraki:

Residents of Rakiraki Town are preparing for the worst.

Businessman Asmat Ali says Rakiraki Town is already closing down.

Rakiraki Town Council has also confirmed that the town will be closed tomorrow.

 

Water Supply:

Water Authority of Fiji has confirmed that 40 percent of water supply has been restored to residents in the greater Labasa area while 80 percent of water supply has been restored to residents in Nabouwalu. 

This follows repair works to the major Navau main pipe line in Dogoru river that carries raw water to the treatment plant and then to residents of Labasa.

When questioned by Fijivillage on what plans are in place incase of an unplanned water disruption in the next few days, Water Authority Fiji says that they have increased water carting trucks to service areas in the North if repair works are again washed away.

The Authority has also confirmed that there are 6 water carting trucks servicing areas and are readily on standby in Rakiraki, 23 water carting trucks are servicing areas in Ba, 9 trucks in Tavua, 15 trucks in Lautoka, 9 trucks in Nadi and 12 water carting trucks are servicing Sigatoka.

It adds that 97 percent of water supply has been restored in Rakiraki, 70 percent of water supply has been restored in Ba, 75-85 percent in Tavua, 65 percent in Lautoka, 97 percent in Nadi and 95 percent of water supply has been restored to residents in Sigatoka.

The Authority says that it has also placed 18 water tanks in strategic locations from Ba to Lautoka to also cater for the demand in the Western Division.

The areas in which water tanks have been placed include,  Votua Village, Clopcott, Natutu Village, Sasa Village, Vadravadra Village, Yalalevu, Veisaru, Vatiyaka, Toge Village, Koronubu, Ba Fire Station, Nukuloa and Motoruku.
