Weightlifting Fiji will soon be making announcements on the appointment of a National Head Coach.

This will be the first time that Weightlifting will have a full-time National Head Coach.

In the past National Coaches have been appointed for each international competition.

This role has been shared between Weightlifting Fiji’s National Development Officer Joe Vueti, Strength and Conditioning Coach Henry Elder and International Referee Della Shaw-Elder.

In a statement, Weightlifting Fiji says it has been working with the Fiji National Sports Commission  over the past year, to identify and appoint an International Coach to help take the sport forward to the next level.

Weightlifting Fiji President, Atma Maharaj said that the Government had announced the provision of funding for International Coaches for selected sports a few years ago.

He says Weightlifting Fiji has held off this offer, until recently, to enable it to build its foundations first.

Atma says with the appointment of the full-time Head Coach, they are hoping to sign up to 8 lifters in multiple weight categories on a two-year agreement, to dedicate to qualifying and performing well at Tokyo 2020.
