The Ministry of Waterways have commissioned a project worth $561,292.23 to build a seawall to protect Vunivau Village in Navua as they have lost their village cemetery and plantation land due to the Navua River bank erosion.
Minister for Waterways, Dr Mahendra Reddy stated that this project is expected to take about 150 days to complete and it will see a seawall made of boulders half a kilometer above the river bank.
He adds that this will minimise the flooding in the village and will also stop the river bank from expanding.
Meanwhile desilting works have started at the Nakauvadra River in Rakiraki and this project has cost the Ministry over $1.3 million.
The work is expected to finish in three months time as the Ministry expects to clear 3.5 kilometers of debris and it also wants to dredge the river.
Rakiraki Town council, chief executive Rakesh Chandra highlighted that Rakiraki town has faced more than 20 major flooding this year.
Reddy has assured the people of Fiji in particular the people living in flood prone areas.
