The foundation phase and groundwork of the National Gallery of Contemporary Arts that will be located at the Victoria Parade in Suva has commenced.

This was confirmed by a British Council Consultant Sally Ward, who says that the doors to the new gallery will be opened in 2020.

In the 2018‑2019 National Budget, $3 million had been set aside for this project.

Ward says that there are designs that have been done for the gallery and they still have to finish this phase before they start with the next phase which is the demolishing and the refurbishment of the building.

She says that there will be spaces for different sorts of art.

Ward says that the gallery will be a start of the art in Fiji and for capturing the talent out there.

Meanwhile the Attorney‑General and Minister responsible for Climate Change, officiated at the Arts and Plastic Dialogue with the theme “Art, Ocean Plastics and the National Gallery of Contemporary Arts” in Suva this morning.

Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted ways in which the National Gallery of Contemporary Arts can support Fiji’s tourism and leisure brand as a world‑leaser in eco‑awareness.

The dialogue had a robust panel discussion comprised of Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar, Minister for Waterways Mahendra Reddy and Permanent Secretary for Education Allison Burchell.
