A 45‑year‑old man has been jailed for 3 years for assaulting his wife.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.
On 28 July 2017, the man had an argument with his spouse when she declined to assist him to load a pig in a vehicle.
He got angry and assaulted her with a stick.
She sustained bruises, swelling on her left thigh.
The woman then filed a police complaint and the husband was charged.
He was granted bail and on the same day, the man struck his wife's legs with a cane knife.
In his sentence, High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar said that the courts will never condone family violence adding that this must be denounced.
He says the primary purpose of the sentence is deterrence and custodial sentence is inevitable in cases where a weapon is used to inflict physical injuries to the victim.
A non parole period of 2 years has been set.
