‘Fijians do not belong on the streets.’

This was highlighted by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Dr Josefa Koroivueta who says that they are on a mission to manage the people that they are getting off the streets in major towns and cities from a humanitarian perspective.

Speaking to Fijivillage, Dr Koroivueta says that they will continue with this clean sweep in Suva and then move to other municipalities.

Koroivueta says the people that they got off the streets in Suva yesterday, have now been given new hope.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary also highlighted that there is a slight increase in the number of beggars and most of them are mentally challenged.

Koroivueta says that a challenge for the Ministry is that most of these people are neglected by their own family members.

Koroivueta also says that some older persons are on the streets and they discourage this as the elderly belong to their families.
