The Fiji National University has taken into consideration concerns raised regarding the standard of English of teachers.
These were the sentiments shared by FNU Pro Vice Chancellor Research, Professor Nii-k Plange while speaking to Fijivillage about the measures taken by FNU with regards to improving the level of English amongst university students in Fiji.
Earlier this year parents had raised concerns with the Attorney General and Minister for Education Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum about the declining status of spoken and written English of teachers during consultations.
The Education Ministry had revealed that 50% of university graduates seeking to be teachers had failed the Ministry of Education’s English Proficiency Test.
It added that during the Teachers Job Test earlier this year, about 2,600 graduates sat for test hoping to get one of the 2,500 teaching positions being offered by the Education Ministry.
More than 50% of the graduates that sat for the test were from FNU.
The Education Ministry had also stated that when they assessed some of the letters being written by teachers to the Ministry of Education headquarters, they could not believe that it was being written by teachers in the field.
