The construction of seven climate-proofed homes in Narikoso, Kadavu will begin at the end of this year.

The families are being relocated due to rising sea levels caused by climate change.

The project which began in 2016 in partnership with the Fijian Government, European Union and German donor agency GIZ and is worth $1.71 million and was due to be completed this year.

Spokesperson for the project Gabor Sasvari said the delays caused for the relocation were due to factors beyond their control such as weather and the unavailability of barges needed to supply materials as they are currently being used to supply water to outer islands.

Solar panels will also be installed at the new relocation sites and the village has also received support for livestock farming and household vegetable farming.

Satellite data has indicated that sea levels in Fiji have risen by 6 millimeters per year since 1993 which is higher than the global average of 2.8 to 3.6 millimeters per year.
