One person has died and nine other passengers have been injured injured after a serious crash between a bus and a car near the small Otago town of Kingston.

The crash happened on the State Highway 6 Kingston‑Garston Highway just after 7.20am on Thursday.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said one of the passengers has been seriously injured, three have suffered moderate injuries and five have minor injuries.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, a police spokeswoman said.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (fenz) spokeswoman Jill Higgison said crews from Garston, Kingston and Frankton were at the scene.

An Otago Helicopters spokesman said two helicopters from Queenstown and Dunedin were sent to the scene.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

Angry after a fight about a burnt omelette, Australian man Peter John Smith loaded his shotgun and headed for his son's bedroom.

In sentencing Smith for murder yesterday, Justice Andrew Tinney said there was no indication the mundane events of December 18 last year would lead to such a shocking incident.

Tinney says that the man took a double‑barrelled shotgun to a defenceless man ‑ his son ‑ lying in his bed, from close range.

Smith was sentenced to 19 years behind bars.

He showed no emotion during the sentence, occasionally wiping his nose with a tissue and glancing at his wife who sobbed and was held by family members.

His son, a 30‑year‑old father‑of‑two, had a few drinks in the backyard of the family home with his parents and gone inside to cook omelettes for dinner.

The first attempt failed and he took it outside to dump in the backyard, but Smith became angry that the eggs could make their dog sick.

There was a scuffle and the pair wrestled before the son went inside and Smith sat down for dinner.

He calmly ate, put on his dressing gown and went to a caravan parked in the driveway where he retrieved a 12‑gauge shotgun, assembled it, put ammunition inside and went back to the house.

He told his wife about his plans, opened his son's bedroom door, turned on the light and fired two fatal shots through his back and chest before dismantling the gun, going outside and telling his wife to call the police.
