A total of 503 trader inspections have been conducted to date, of which 41 traders were found to be in breach of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission Act 2010 and have been warned for possible prosecution.
This has been confirmed by the Commission’s CEO Joel Abraham who says that this festive season, traders are cautioned to act within the ambit of the law.
Abraham says that they have been carrying out trader inspections over the past few weeks to ensure traders comply with the provisions of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission Act 2010.
He says that the common issues noted during inspections include no price marking and display, no marking of pull dates and non‑issuance of receipts.
Abraham says that apart from on the ground inspections, the Commission is also scrutinizing advertisements whereby those found to be misleading and deceptive are warned and advised to rectify at the earliest.
Recently three prominent traders were fined $10,000 each for failing to comply with the provisions of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission Act 2010.
He says that this being the final weekend before Christmas, consumers will be carrying out last minute shopping with increased spending and the Commission would like to caution all traders to refrain from engaging in unfair business tactics.
Abraham says that the ground inspections shall be conducted throughout the coming weeks as we enter into the new year and consumers are advised to contact the Commission for any unfair business tactics during this festive period.
