As festivities continue, effective service delivery remains a key priority and all Municipal Councils will be working closely with government with the aim to continuously improve service delivery to all Fijians and stakeholders.
These were the words of the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development Premila Kumar while officially handing over brand new 9 ton Isuzu Compactor Truck worth $240,000 to the Lami Town Council.
Whilst handing over the truck, the Minister said the new addition to the fleet, would certainly boost solid waste management services provided by the Council.
Kumar also highlighted that records show the Lami Town Council is engaged in providing solid waste management services to ratepayers and business houses within Lami Town, 17 informal settlements in and around Lami Town and a village.
She adds that since August this year, Lami Town Council had taken over the collection of solid waste management services, which was once under the Navua Rural Local Authority.
Kumar reiterated that under the 2018‑19 Budget, government allocated $250,000 for the commencement of the Lami market concept design works, while $50,000 was allocated for the upgrading of storm water drains in Lami Town.
The Local Government Minister adds that to support extension services for Lami Town Council, a sum of $100,000 was allocated by the Fijian Government.
Kumar says that government will continue to provide support and assistance to the Lami Town Council and other municipalities with the belief that the Councils will in turn provide even better services to its stakeholders.
The newly appointed Minister has started her official tour of the Central Municipal Councils and Government Statutory Organizations.
