Celebrating India's Republic Day in Fiji is a great joy because Fiji is one of India's closest friends and even as India takes pride in its own achievements, it also celebrates Fiji's growth.

These were the words of the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Vishvas Sapkal who was speaking at the celebration of India's 70th Republic Day at Novotel in Lami last night.

Sapkal says India has respect for the independence of other countries and India strongly pursues international peace and harmony.

He says there has always been good relations between India and Fiji.

Speaking on behalf of the Fijian government, the Chief of Protocol from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jonatani Tagivetaua congratulated the people of India in their celebration.

Tagivetaua says the Indian Constitution came into effect on the 26th of Jan 1950 with a democratic government system which made the country an independent republic.

He says India has set examples for Fiji.

The event was attended by  President Jioji Konrote, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, Chief Justice Anthony Gates, Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho, Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Premila Kumar, Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau, Minister for Forestry Osea Naiqamu, Minister for Employment Parveen Bala and Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Ashneel Sudhakar.

The event was attended by some Permanent Secretaries and close to 400 guests.
