Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa says it is important that her Ministry and the National Council of Older Persons work together so that the implementation of policies mandated by the law is done on the shortest possible time.

While addressing the meeting of the National Council of Older Persons today, Vuniwaqa stated they need to bring the Fiji National Policy on Ageing, up to date.

Vuniwaqa says the number of old persons in Fiji is increasing by 3,000 people per year.

She adds that about 69% of our population is under the age of 40 and 30 years from now we will have an aged population where there are more older citizens than the younger ones.

She says they plan to get financial support for the implementation of this policies to prepare themselves for when this happens.

Vuniwaqa adds these policies will not only benefit current elderly persons but also those in the future.
