Fiji and other Pacific Islands team are being considered to be part of the proposed Nations Championship competition but this will be based on merit.

World Rugby says the proposed Nations Championship competition being discussed to debut in 2022 will provide opportunities for all teams to compete at the top level on merit, with promotion and relegation.

It says the Pacific Islands and all teams outside the current 6 Nations and The Rugby Championship would have a potential pathway.

This proposed annual global competition will see the top international rugby nations divided into two conferences, the European conference and Rest of the World conference.

Each conference will be divided into three divisions.

One division will have 6 teams which means there will 16 teams in each conference.

Division 1 in the European conference will initially include England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

World Rugby says Division 1 in the Rest of the World conference will include New Zealand, Australia, Argentina and South Africa plus two other teams based on World Rugby rankings.

Based on current rankings, those two teams are Fiji and Japan.

There will be a promotion and relegation system in the divisions.
