Fiji Sugar Corporation has offered 104 employees of Penang Mill redundancy packages.

Penang Mill was closed in 2016 due to damages sustained during Cyclone Winston and the employees were sent to work at the Rarawai and Lautoka Mills.

FSC CEO Graham Clark says after almost three years of absorbing the Penang Mill employees into the Rarawai and Lautoka Mill operations, they have now given them the opportunity to either become permanent workers in the remaining two Viti Levu mills or take the redundancy package.

Clark says some employees have indicated their intention to stay on and if they do, new contracts will be drawn up, however others will receive redundancy packages.

He adds they have managed to identify ten roles for ten potential employees and the number could increase as the months pass.

The redundancy package includes a 4 months notice period that the employee will work or be paid plus a 3 months severance pay and a payment of 2 weeks for every year worked.

One of the provisions in the Employment Relations Act, in regards to Redundancy is that the Employer make every effort to try and find alternative employment for Employees, whose position is being made redundant. FSC served the notice last week which will expire at the end of August. The Management of FSC is also looking at alternative employment, where possible.
