Israel Folau's future in Australian rugby is looking increasingly grim after an independent panel determined that the Wallabies superstar committed a "high level" breach of his contract.

TVNZ reports the three‑person panel will now decide on a sanction for Folau.

30‑year‑old Folau appeared before the hearing to contest Rugby Australia's decision to terminate his contract after he posted in mid‑April on social media that gay people, along with other "sinners," will face hell unless they repent.

Folau has played 73 test matches for Australia. In his most recent match for the Waratahs, Folau scored his 60th try, the most of any player in Super Rugby, breaking the record of former New Zealand winger Doug Howlett.

In Round 13 of Super Rugby this week, the Blues meet the Hurricanes at 7.35pm Friday at Eden Park while the Rebels meet the Reds in Melbourne at 9.45pm Friday.

The Crusaders meet the Bulls 5.10am Saturday in Pretoria while the Highlanders play the Jaguares at 5.15pm Saturday in Dunedin.

The Chiefs meet the Sharks in Waikato at 7.35pm Saturday while the Lions face the Waratahs at 1.05am Sunday.
