The South Pacific Defence Ministers meeting starts in Denarau in Nadi today and will finish on Friday.

It provides an opportunity for regional Defence Ministers and Chiefs of Defence Forces to discuss common security challenges and identify ways to improve regional security cooperation.

A government statement says the 3‑day meet is the first of its kind to be held in the country after Fiji attended its first meeting in New Zealand in 2017 and was then admitted as a member country.

The meeting involves defence ministers from Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, France and Chile with the United States and United Kingdom as observers.
