The Fiji Trades Union Congress has applied for a permit to organise a march and rally in Suva on the 10th of August this year.

FTUC National Secretary Felix Anthony says they have applied for the permit in view of the ongoing harassment against workers and unionists and pending campaign issues.

Those pending campaign issues include the National Minimum Wage,  Right to Strike, Labour Law Reforms, Imposition of Individual Contracts, Federated Airline Staff Association Issues, Vatukoula Strike and Harassment and intimidation of trade unionists.

Anthony says they have applied for the place of assembly to be Sukuna Park while the march route will be from the Suva Flea Market to Sukuna Park.

They have applied for the march and rally to start at 10.30am and finish at 5pm.

Anthony says the DPC Southern Registry and Fiji Roads Authority confirmed receipt of the application yesterday and it is expected to be processed within 5 days by the FRA and 7 days by the Police.

He adds that a separate application for venue hire has been made to Suva City Council.

Anthony says they believe that democracy, human rights including freedom of speech, assembly, peaceful dissent and workers’ rights are being threatened and denied.
