Fiji will host the 2020 Ministerial Interim Meeting of the Pacific Island Leaders Meeting.
This will be the first time a Pacific Island country will host the meeting.
While confirming this, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs Taro Kono says given Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama's proposal, Japan has decided to hold the next PALM Ministerial Interim Meeting in mid‑2020 in Fiji.
Kono says it has been a year since PALM8 and Japan has decided to increase resources for this region to pursue a Free and Open Indo‑Pacific.
He says they will promote new efforts particularly on maritime issues, connectivity, climate change and disaster management.
He adds him and Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Inia Seruiratu have reconfirmed their collaboration to pursue Free and Open Indo Pacific and discussed concrete measures to that end.
Kono says for example in disaster management, we are currently preparing to provide assistance for the Nadi Flood Alleviation project.
